First things first - cut the power to the dishwasher by unplugging it or switching it off at the breaker.

If there is still a significant amount of water inside the unit, you'll have to get creative and remove as much as possible in order to get at the clog and drain inside.

Look for the filter in the bottom of the dishwasher. Consult your owner's manual for details if you are unsure. You may need to remove a few screws to get it out. Be careful to not break any plastic clips holding it in place, too. Remove the filter and give it a good cleaning. If looks like a clog, this could be the cause of your drainage woes. Replace the filter before you close everything up.

Next, check that there are no blockages in the waste hose. You may have to pull the unit out from under the counter to see the hose. If the hose is squashed or bent, it could be stopping waste water from properly draining. Make sure there is enough room behind the dishwasher for the hose to drain without being impeded.

If the waste hose is connected to the drain under your kitchen sink, make sure there are no blockages or clogs there either.

Once everything looks clean and clear, give your dishwasher a test run. If you're still having trouble, it's definitely time to call in the professionals.
